Round 5 of the Indonesia 1/8 GP National Championship was held at JITC Senayan last Sunday, with 19 drivers joining the race. Weather was perfect since Saturday’s practice, and surface traction was good.

In Heat 1, Bowie took the lead with 19 laps @ 5.02sec, followed by Suwardi Suliandy with [email protected] and Tons with [email protected].

Heat 2 saw a close battle between Sadikin, Bowie, Teddy Syach and Suwardi until the last two ran out of fuel and Bowie took the first position in qualifying followed by Sadikin and Hendri.

In Heat 3, the weather became hotter and traction was not as good as in the previous heat. It was Bowie who took the lead with [email protected] followed by Suwardi only 1 second behind, and Sadikin in 3rd place.

After 3 heats, only the one best heat counted, so the Top 10 were as follows :

The race used a bump-up system with 4 top positions waiting for the Main Final, 5th to 9th waiting for the Semi Final, and the rest starting from the 1/4 Final.

In the 1/4 final, 10 drivers were competing for the top 5 positions to bump up to the Semi Final. Sanny Boy, Akok, Usman Halim and Albert were in secure positions after 5 minutes into the 15 minute run. Richard had some engine failures and fought hard to get to the 5th position, and that was not until the last minute when he passed Handoyo to secure his seat for the Semi Final run later.

In the Semi Final, things were getting tougher as drivers were competing for the top 6 spots with same performances for 20-minute duration. Teddy Syach secured his seat after taking 1st place in the run. Heri Susanto narrowly missed the Main Final because of a mechanical failure in the last 40sec, but he still was able to keep 3rd place while Richard passed him for 2nd place. Roni took 4th place, Hendry 5th, and Linardi completed the top 6 positions for bump-up into the Main Final.

After running 20 minutes, Sadikin took the lead from Bowie momentarily but both drivers tangled with each other which caused a tyre pop-off and engine failure on Sadikin’s car. Teddy experienced engine failure and Suwardi climbed up to 2nd place. Tons, Hendry and Heri followed closely behind. Richard and Linardi retired early due to engine problems.

At the 30-minute mark, Bowie experienced a radio glitch and retired, while Teddy was able to take the lead. Sadikin recovered to 3rd position and was closing on Suwardi in 2nd place. Tons followed securely in 4th place while Heri fought hard for 5th but retired due to a engine break-down later on.

After running 40 minutes, Sadikin experienced an engine failure again and the plug blew out, forcing an early retirement. This gave Tons his 3rd place finish. Roni’s consistent driving awarded him 4th place. Teddy lead securely to the finish line while Suwardi followed in 2nd place.
